Cat Breeds
There are many different breeds
of cats. Some are easily recognized by their unique coats such as the
hairless Sphynx or the long haired Persians. Others are not so visibly unique
but have other distinct features.
Different registries and cat fancier societies have different definitions of
breeds and permissible colours/patterns. New breeds appear all the time by
mutation, standardization of local varieties and from variants of established
breeds. One trend is crossing domestic cats with wild cats. Only a few
crossbreeds are listed, most are regarded as 'moggies' (mongrels) by
registries. Many breeds exist in "traditional", "older style" or "authentic"
versions as well is in the more commonly seen modern ("classic" or
"contemporary") version. The list of cat breeds here is not based on any
particular registry or society but seeks to include all common and recognized
rare cat breeds. For more information on a particular cat breed, click on the breed. |
