History:
The Welsh Pony and Cob Society Stud Book designate the two pony breeds
Section A and Section B, the two cobs Section C and Section D. The Welsh
Mountain
pony is Section A and is the oldest and the foundation of other distinct
equine breeds. It is believed Julius Caesar founded the stud and crossed
it with eastern blood. Until the 20th century there were
occasional infusions of Arab, Thoroughbred, and Hackney blood. Now the
Welsh
Mountain
pony is often used to improve or develop other breeds.

pony’s height must not exceed 12HH. They are the smallest in the Welsh
Pony and Cob Society Stud Book.
Colors: The

pony is often gray but can be any solid color.
Description:
Many consider the Welsh
Mountain
pony to be the most beautiful of all ponies. The head is small and
Arab-like with kind, wide set eyes; small alert ears; a nicely arched
neck of good length; sloping shoulders, deep chest, and a strong back;
the hindquarters are fine and muscular, and the tail is carried gaily.
Their legs are strong and made of good, dense bone. They are enduring,
resilient, and easy keepers.

spirited.
Uses: The
Welsh Mountain
pony makes an excellent children’s pony and they are outstanding
performers in the sport of carriage driving.
