The home of the Trakehner horse breed
is Germany.

The Trakehner horse breed is in the warmblood group.
History:
Prior to the 13th
century, the Trakehner horse was from East Prussia. They were a tough and
stocky type of horse. They derived from the native Schweiken breed, now
extinct, and included Mongolian and Turkmenian blood. They were used for
transport and in battle. By the 13th century, the breeding
system was producing horses for farm work as well. In 1732, the Royal
Trakehner Stud Administration was begun and efforts were made to refine
the breed. Arab, Thoroughbred, Turkoman, Danish, and Mecklenburg blood
was infused. They served as cavalry horses, and carriage horses. They
were known to be elegant and tough and by 1924 they became popular as
riding horses and competitive sport horses.

In 1944 they were
driven from East Prussia by the Russians and thousands of horses fled but
only a few reached West Germany and survived. There they were
re-registered and breeding resumed.

Description:
The Trakehner shows the influence of
the Thoroughbred and the Arabian with a refined head and large eyes; a
well made elegant neck; powerful sloping shoulders allowing for the free
and expansive movement; deep chested, rounded barrel, and a compact back
with very powerful hindquarters. The tail is well set and carried high.
Overall, the Trakehner horse is elegant and has natural presence.

Trakehner of today is one of the most versatile competition horses and is
ridden at the highest levels of competition. The Trakehner is also used
to improve other breeds.
