The Lusitano horse breed originates in
Portugal.

History:
The Lusitano horse breed is a very similar to the Andalusian of Spain and
until recently were considered to be one and the same. They were bred on
the Iberian peninsula for centuries and were once very useful as
warhorses. In 1966 the Lusitano got its own stud book. Since then the
Portuguese breeding program has focused on preserving the strength and
courage of the Lusitano horse. The genetic background is mostly Barb and
Sorraia blood.

Lusitano horses stand generally 15.1HH to 16HH.
Colors: The
Lusitano are mostly gray, bay, or chestnut and can be any true color
including dun.
Description:
The Lusitano horses have a proud
bearing and joie de vivre. They generally have a roman nose, large eyes
and a wide forehead; powerful shoulders and loins; a compact body, a
sloping croup and a lower tail carriage than some horses. They often have
a silky and luxurious mane and tail. The Lusitano is a horse with good,
dense bone and well-built. They have elevated paces and are able to
accelerate and maneuver very quickly.

Temperament:
The Lusitano is known for being
courageous, and strong. They are intelligent, gentle, and affectionate
and like to work hard.
Uses: The
Lusitano horse is used for bullfighting in Spain and excels at high
school work and can also be seen in sports such as show jumping and
carriage driving.
