Ardennais Horse Breed

Country of Origin: The original Ardennais horse breed came from the mountainous

Blood Type: The Ardennais horse breed is in the coldblood group. 

History: The ancestors of the Ardennais horses were mentioned 2000 years ago in writings by Julius Caesar. They were a lighter horse then and were used as a riding horse as well as a draft horse. They later became a heavier type of horse were used as artillery horses and farm, and heavy draft horses. There are still 3 types: the original small Ardennais, a larger version known as the Auxois,

 

 

 

and the heaviest and largest framed Ardennais du Nord which resulted from out crossing to the Belgian Draft.

Height: The Ardennais horses range from 14.2 – 16 HH. 

Colors: The Ardennais horses must be roan, red-roan, liver chestnut, bay, or iron gray. Black and dappled gray are not allowed. 

Description: The Ardennais has a cob-like conformation. They have a strong and compact body; strong arched neck; and muscled quarters. They legs are feathered, short and very strong. They are power animals with freer movement than usually seen in draft horses.

Temperament: The Ardennais have a kind, gentle, and lively disposition.  

Uses: The Ardennais are used in farm work.
