The Appaloosa horse breed originates in
the United States.
History:
The Nez Perce Indians
developed the Appaloosa breed
from horses brought to America by the Spanish conquistadores in the
1500’s. The Nez Perce skillfully established a horse breed with color for
camouflage that was also fast, strong and athletic. The Nez Perce Indians
were captured and their horses slaughtered in the late 1800’s by the US
army and in recent years the breed has been re-established.

The Appaloosa Horse
ranges in height from 14HH to
15.2HH.
Colors:
The basic coat color is roan and has a
variety of color configurations: snowflake, leopard, frost, marble,
spotted blanket, and white blanket. The Appaloosa usually has mottled
skin on the nose, lips, and genitals.
Description:
A trademark of the Appaloosa horse is
the sparse mane and tail. The head is small with a straight profile, a
long, muscular neck, a deep chest, sloping shoulders, muscular
hindquarters, and a short, compact back.

Temperament:
Although the Appaloosa is
an energetic
horse they are also docile and
quiet.
Uses:
As a riding horse, the Appaloosa excels
since it is bred for stamina and athletic ability.
