The Irish Wolfhound Dog Breed

Country of Origin:  The Irish Wolfhound originated in Ireland.

Height: 28-35 inches (71-90 cm.)

Weight: 90-150 pounds (40-69 kg.)

Description: one of the tallest dogs in the world, Irish Wolfhounds are a gentle breed even though some of them can reach the size of a small pony. Shaggy with wiry eyebrows the Irish Wolfhound has large round paws and a very muscular chest. Their slightly curved tails hangs between their back legs. The Irish Wolfhound is in the Hound group.

Colors: Irish Wolfhounds come in gray, brindle, red, black or white.

Coat: Average shedders, the Irish Wolfhound requires regular brushing and its coat should be freed of dead hairs once every year.

Temperament: The Irish wolfhound is a sweet gentle breed that is truly loyal to their owners. They require firm training and are friendly by nature therefore not making good watchdogs. Irish Wolfhounds are friendly with other dogs and can be left alone with children. This breed requires two years before it reaches full maturity. Irish Wolfhounds have also been known to be somewhat clumsy.

Health Concerns: Irish Wolfhounds are prone to cardiomyopathy, bone cancer, bloat, PRA, Von Willebrands and hip dysplasia.

Life Expectancy: The life expectancy of the Irish Wolfhound is about 6-8 years

Living Environment: Irish wolfhounds require a large yard and large house and will not do well in small spaces. The owner of an Irish Wolfhound requires a large enough car to get this breed around. Irish Wolfhounds like to chase things and need a secure enclosed area for playtime.
