Country of Origin: The French Mastiff originated
in France.
Height: 23-30 inches (58-75cm)
Weight: 120-145 pounds (54.4-65.2kg)
Description: French Mastiffs are reputed as having
the biggest head in the dog world. They are short stocky
mastiffs with wrinkled faces and an undershot jaw. French
Mastiffs have thick skin and a dewlap on their neck.
Colors: French Mastiffs come in shades of fawn to
mahogany with a black or red mask. |
Coat: An average shedder, French
Mastiffs require little grooming.
Temperament: French Mastiffs are patient and calm
and very devoted to their families. They are however serious
guard and watchdogs and are confrontational with strangers.
French Mastiffs are gentle with children and family members
but are not suited for inexperienced owners. French Mastiffs
snore and drool. Two males will not get along with each
other.
Health Concerns: French Mastiffs are susceptible
to Hip Dysplasia, Demodex Mange, heart murmurs. They are
difficult to breed and often have to be delivered by
Cesarean section because the puppies heads are so large.
Sometimes the mother has been known to accidentally squash
her pups while nursing. |

Life Expectancy: The life expectancy of the French
Mastiff is about 6-8 years.
Living Environment: French Mastiffs require plenty
of exercise. They will do okay in an apartment, however they
are fairly inactive indoors.
