| The Basenji Dog Breed
Country of Origin: The Basenji originated in Egypt
but was refined by English breeders.
Height: males 16-17 inches (41-43 cm.) females
15-16 inches (38-41 cm.)
Weight: males 22-26 pounds (10-12 kg.) females
20-25 pounds (9-11 kg.)
Description: Known as the non-barking dog, the
Basenji never barks. Elegant and athletic, the Basenji is
roughly the size of a fox terrier. Its tail curls off to one
side of its muscular thighs. The basenji's forehead is
furrowed with wrinkles. The Basenji is in the Hound group.
Colors: The Basenji comes in copper, red, black
and tan, black and brindle. |
Usually with white feet and white on
the chest and tip of the tail. They may also have a white
facial blaze, white legs and/or a white collar.
Coat: This breed washes itself like a cat and has
no dog smell. It is a light shedder and good for people with
allergies.
Temperament: Basenji's are alert, very active and
extremely intelligent. They can climb fences and tend to
chew a lot so require a lot of toys. This breed is best with
patient older children and should not be trusted with
non-canine pets. Basenji's have a strong urge to please and
should be trained from an early age. The Basenji is somewhat
aloof and dislikes wet weather. |

Health Concerns: The Basenji is prone to kidney
problems, progressive retinal atrophy, intestinal, and eye
problems.
Life Expectancy: The life expectancy for The
Basenji is about 10-12 years.
Living Environment: The Basenji is happiest living
with two or three of its own and they will not fight amongst
each other. Basenjis require plenty of exercise or else they
will become overweight and lazy.
